Nepal will press Qatar to investigate alleged abuses against migrant workers after reports of deplorable working conditions and deaths, authorities said Sunday.

“We held a meeting with the Labour Ministry and the government has now directed the embassy in Qatar to initiate talks with the government there for protection of the rights of Nepali migrant workers,” said Bal Bahadur Tamang, the president of the Foreign Employment Agencies Association.

“We would like to ask the Qatar government to look into the treatment of our workers there and shut down companies that have not even provided basics like food, shelter or pay.”

Recent media reports said Nepali migrants working on projects for the World Cup 2022 are subject to abuse and harsh working conditions. The employment association said several had died due to accidents and heart problems.

An investigation by Britain’s The Guardian newspaper said 44 Nepalis had died in Qatar from June 4th to August 8th.

Nepal also recalled its ambassador to Qatar, Maya Kumari Sharma, for calling Qatar “an open jail” for Nepali workers. The government said it made the move after Doha complained about her comments.

Government figures said 7,200 Nepali migrant workers have died in past decade in the Gulf countries and Malaysia.

“The Qatar government should understand that the World Cup is a matter of prestige for them and address this issue immediately,” said Tamang. “Some workers never wake up after sleeping.”
